Direct Print vs. Paper Transfer….

Direct Print Printing System

Advantages of Direct Print

  1. Lower production costs because
  • it prints directly onto the fabric without transfer paper, saving a lot on paper costs
  • Saves production time because heat-curing the fabric is easy and fast, with very little chance of spoilage. Direct Print is therefore very popular with manufacturers who want low costs and easy, fast production that saves time and labor
  1. The second advantage of Direct Print is that it can lay down more ink on the fabric than Paper Transfer. Because Direct Print prints directly onto the fabric, we can set the right amount, heavy or light, of ink on the fabric. Direct Print is therefore especially well suited for
  • Printing beach flags, since beach flags need the print to be visible on both sides, front and back, which requires laying down a large amount of ink so it soaks through to the back
  • Printing backlit fabric for lightboxes, since backlit materials need heavy, dense ink so that they look bright and beautiful when used in a lightbox

Disadvantages of Direct Print

  1. Lower print quality than Paper Transfer: images are less sharp, and colors are not as vivid or bright as Paper Transfer
  2. The fabric to be printed must have a surface coating applied by the textile mill to accept inkjet ink

This means fabric sold in ordinary shops cannot be printed, so fabric choices are very limited

  1. In general, Direct Print fabric cannot be washed, because the surface has a coating to accept the ink, and after washing, residue may remain on the fabric as stains

Paper Transfer Printing System

Advantages of Paper Transfer

  1. Images are clearly sharper and smoother than Direct Print, because Paper Transfer prints onto transfer paper made to accept inkjet ink. This paper supports very high-resolution printing, up to the highest resolution the printer can produce, so prints on transfer paper are extremely detailed and smooth. When pressed onto the fabric, the result is a very sharp image
  2. Delivers vivid colors that clearly stand out compared with Direct Print
  3. High print quality that is more beautiful than Direct Print. Paper Transfer prints are smooth, show shadow and highlight details more clearly, and look better with clearer depth than Direct Print
  4. Backlit fabric prints are brighter, with more vivid and clearer colors than Direct Print
  5. Because Paper Transfer prints onto paper which is then pressed onto polyester fabric, the fabric does not need a mill-applied coating to accept inkjet ink as with Direct Print. This means we can use commonly available fabrics, as long as they contain at least 60% polyester. Paper Transfer can therefore print on a wider variety of fabrics, opening up new market opportunities

Disadvantages of Paper Transfer

  1. Higher production costs, since it must be printed on transfer paper and then pressed onto the fabric, and quality transfer paper is expensive
  2. Machines for pressing transfer paper onto fabric cost 4-5 times more than Direct Print fabric curing machines, use 3 times more electricity, and require 380-volt (three-phase) power; they cannot run on standard 220-volt household power
  3. Pressing transfer paper onto fabric is more difficult, involves more steps, and has a higher chance of spoilage than Direct Print fabric curing
  4. Not suitable for producing beach flags, because the dried ink on the paper cannot soak through the fabric to the back very well. If you need beach flags, check whether the manufacturer uses Direct Print or Paper Transfer, as the results are clearly different
  5. Quality, sharpness and color vibrancy depend on the quality of the transfer paper used, and high-quality transfer paper is fairly expensive
  1. Requires more production time and more staff than Direct Print

In summary, the disadvantages of Paper Transfer printing are higher production costs and a more difficult production process than Direct Print
